The sigh is never just a sigh
What that extraordinary loud exhale actually means.
Ever met someone who sighs a lot? Bet you have. Here is something to take to the bank: A sigh is never just a sigh.
It’s compressed communication.
People often sigh when:
- They feel overwhelmed
- They’re disappointed
- They’ve said something five times already
- They want to say something, but can’t
- They want you to notice them without having to actually say anything
Sometimes it’s anger.
Sometimes it’s exhaustion.
Sometimes it’s just their body’s version of ctrl+alt+del.
Quick tip
Next time someone sighs near you, don’t ignore it. Ask what’s going on.
(Unless it’s your partner. Then… tread carefully. Don’t be stupid.)
A colourful moment
During a workshop, one guy sighed so loudly during the feedback round that three people turned around.
I asked him if he disagreed.
He said, “No. I just sigh a lot.”
Fair enough. But why? Maybe I should send him this newsletter.
See you next Wednesday.
