When two Yellows collide… 🟡
…and nobody takes notes.
Some personality clashes are loud and obvious. But others sneak up on you … like two Yellows in a meeting. Both full of energy. Both creative. Both full of absolutely brilliant ideas. The inspiration is flooding through their veins. They are about to reach the MOON!
But ask them to write things down. Crickets. Nothing. We are free spirits!
Ask who’s responsible for what? Confused smiles. Don’t kill the energy!
Ask when the project is due? “Soon-ish!”
You’d think sharing the same colour would make things easier. But sometimes, similar styles lead to shared blind spots — and that’s where chaos brews.
Yellow–Yellow friction looks like:
- A million ideas and close to zero follow-through.
- High enthusiasm, but little to no structure.
- Endless brainstorming but “Who’s doing what?” always becomes … a mystery.
Don’t get me wrong. Yellows are amazing in finding ways no one could predict. Or inventing things no one knew they needed. Or answering questions no one is asking. It’s fun. It’s dynamic. It’s exciting. Until it’s not.
Well, well, well.
Quick tip
When working with someone very similar to yourself, don’t assume alignment. Assign roles. Confirm timelines. Create at least one shared checklist. And yes: Write. It. Down. Pleeeease.
A colourful moment
Two Yellow co-founders in the online gaming industry once told me they had “the best meetings ever.” I asked how the company was doing. They said: “Oh … we haven’t launched yet.”
They’d been planning for 18 months. The to-do list grew by the minute. But no one executed anything. (I haven’t heard from them in a while.)
See you next Wednesday.
